Irregular Preterite Verbs
The following verbs are irregular
in the preterite tense.
Therefore, they do not follow the
pattern for regular
–ar, -er, and –ir preterite verbs.
leer – to read
leí
leíste
leyó

* “y” replaces the “i” in the Leí seis libros para la
3rd persons.
* leyeron is the only form
without an accent.

oír – to hear

3rd persons.

“ver” is just like a
regular –er preterite
verb, without accents.

vieron
Vimos una película el
sábado.
We saw a film on
Saturday.
decir – to say, tell

* The “c” is replaced by a
“j”.
* The 3rd person form
is –eron.
* There are no accents.

Mis padres dijeron que
no.
My parents said no.
hacer – to do, make
hice
hiciste
hizo
* The “c” is replaced by a
“z” in the 3rd person singular
form to maintain the soft
pronunciation.
* There are no accents.

Juan no hizo su tarea.
Juan didn’t do his
homework.
tener – to have
tuve
tuviste
tuvo
* This verb contains “uv”
similiar to the preterite
conjugation of estar:
estuve, estuviste, etc.
* There are no accents.

tuvieron
Tuve que trabajar ayer.
I had to work yesterday.
