#’s and amounts (mucho/poco etc) go BEFORE
the word modified.
 Hay seis hijos en mi familia.
 Tengo (I have) muchos hermanos.

Possessive adjectives (mi/mis/tu/tus etc.) also go
BEFORE the word modified.
 Mi padre es inteligente.
 Tus amigos son guapos.

Descriptive adjectives TYPICALLY go AFTER the
word they describe.
 El novio de María es un chico alto.

Must match GENDER with the words they
describe.
 Michael Jordan es atlético. Kerri Walsh Jennings
es atlética.

Must match NUMBER with the words they
describe.
 Mi hermano es alto. Mis amigos son altos.


Some adjectives can match feminine or
masculine nouns automatically.
These adjectives are typically the ones that end
in a letter other than “o” or “r”
 Ella es inteligente. Él es inteligente.

Adjectives that end in “o” change the ending to
“a” for feminine matching.
 Mario es alto. María es alta.

Adjectives ending in “r” tend to add an “a” to the
end of the word for feminine matching.
 Mario es trabajador. María es trabajadora.

For matching with plural nouns:
 Add an “s” to adjectives ending with vowels.
▪ El chico es gordo. Los chicos son gordos.
 Add an “es” to adjectives ending with consonants.
▪ El examen es difícil. Los examenes son difíciles.

NOTE: One or two adjectives need accents
added when made plural.
 On your list: joven vs. jóvenes
