 In Spanish, as in English, demonstrative adjectives are
words that “demonstrate” or “point out” nouns.
Demonstrative adjectives agree in gender and number
with the noun they modify. English has two sets of
demonstratives (this, these and that, those), but Spanish
has three sets.

Use este, esta, estos, and estas when referring
to people or things that are close to you in space
or time.
 Este escritorio es nuevo.
 This desk is new.
 Traen el sofá esta tarde.
 They will bring the sofa this afternoon.
Use ese, esa, esos, and esas when referring to
events, people, or things that are not relatively
close to you. Sometimes they are close to the
person you are addressing.
 Esa lámpara es muy bonita.
 That lamp is very pretty.
 Ese amigo de Lola vende su auto, ¿verdad?
 That friend of Lola’s is selling his car, isn’t he?
 Use aquel, aquella, aquellos, and aquellas
when referring to people or things that are more
distant, or to events that are distant in time.
 Aquel edificio es muy alto.
 That building (over there) is very tall.
 En aquella visita los niños jugaron en el
parque.
 During that (long ago) visit, the children played in
the park.
Do you want this apple?
¿Quieres esta manzana?
Do you want that apple?
¿Quieres esa manzana?
No. I want that apple way over there.
No. Quiero aquella manzana.
Pronombres
demostrativos
 Demonstratives can be used as pronouns to
mean this one/these or that one/those, thus
avoiding repetition when speaking or writing.
 Compran este espejo y ese.
 They are buying this mirror and that one.
 Estas lámparas y aquellas son mis favoritas.
 These lamps and those over there are my favorites.
 To refer to a general idea or concept, or to ask for the
identification of an object, use esto, eso, or aquello. These
forms are invariable.
These forms refer to unidentified or unspecified nouns,
situations, ideas, and concepts. They do not change in gender
or number and never carry an accent mark.
— ¿Qué es esto?
— Eso es interesante.
— Aquello es bonito.
What’s this?
That’s interesting.
That’s pretty.
 Trabajan mucho y eso es muy bueno.
 They work a lot, and that is very good.
 ¿Qué es esto?
 What is this?
 Es un espejo.
 It is a mirror.
 Aquello es un edificio de la universidad.
 That (over there) is a university building.
