Possessive pronouns
“Abriendo Paso – Gramática”
pg. 92
• Possessive pronouns function like
possessive adjectives (that is, they indicate
ownership of possession), but they replace
the noun. As pronouns, possessives refers
directly to the noun owned or possessed (not
to the possessor) and so agree in gender
and number with what is possessed.
Flora tiene dos entradas, la mía y la tuya.
Floras has two tickets, yours and mine
The possessive pronoun is formed by using the definite article and the
long form of the possessive adjective.
el mío, la mía, los míos, las mías
(mine)
el tuyo, la tuya, los tuyos, las tuyas
(yours)
el suyo, la suya, los suyos, las
suyas (yours, his, hers, its)
el nuestro, la nuestra, los
nuestros, las nuestras (ours)
el vuestro, la vuestra, los
vuestros, las vuestras (yours)
el suyo, la suya, los suyos, las
suyas (yours, theirs)
El suyo, la suya, los suyos, las suyas can mean his, hers, yours, its,
theirs. In n order to avoid ambiguity, replace:
- el suyo, la suya, los suyos, las suyas with: el (la, los, las) de + noun
or
- el (la, los, las) de + pronoun (él, ella, Ud., Uds., ellos, ellas)
-Esta cocina es más grande que la suya
-Esta cocina es más grande que la de Juan
(la de Rita, etc.)
-This kitchen is larger than his (hers, yours,
theirs)
-This kitchen is bigger thatn Juan’s (Rita’s,
etc.)
-Las cocina es más grande que la de él (la de
ella, la de Ud., la de ellos, la de ellas)
-This kitchen is bigger than his (hers, yours,
theirs)
Recuerda que….
• The definite article of the noun owned or
possessed is an integral part of the
possessive pronoun and can only be
omitted after the verb ser.
Esta mochila es tuya
This backpack is yours
When the noun to which a possessive pronoun refers is
clear from the context, it can be left out
• Ellos trajeron los bocadillos
• Sí, pero los bocadillos tuyos
son los mejores
• Los míos son de queso
manchego
• Los suyos (Los de ellos) son
de atún
