AVID’s mission is to close
the achievement gap by
preparing all students for
college readiness and
success in a global society.
AVID:
 Is a four-year program.
 Provides college entry skills
 Offers motivation and guidance
 Prepares students for a fouryear university with college and
career readiness skills
 Increases the participants’ levels
of career awareness




Our program will
include:
3 9th grade classes,
2 10th grade
classes,
2 11th grade
classes, and
2 12th grade
classes.
 That’s
over
200 students!!



AVID isn't a remedial
program for low level
students.
AVID isn't a free ride or a
place for homework.
AVID isn't a college
outreach program for any
specific university.

Now for some…
AVID students are more likely to take AP classes,
complete their college eligibility requirements, and
get into 4-year colleges than students who don’t
take AVID.
Almost all AVID students who participate for at
least 3 years are accepted to college, with roughly
3/4 of these students getting into 4-year
universities.
AVID also helps ensure students, once accepted to
college, possess the higher-level skills they need
for college success.

What makes AVID students stay
in school when others drop out?
◦ the support they receive
◦ the commitment to success
they feel
◦ the inspirational teachers they
encounter
◦ the self-determination they
exercise
All these factors combine to
makethem persevere despite
considerable challenges.

It is based on rigorous standards.
It was developed by middle and senior high
school teachers in collaboration with college
professors.
It is driven by the WICOR method, which
stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and
Reading.
It is used in AVID elective classes and in
content-area classes.



College students are interviewed and
