WHAT IS THE IDITAROD?
The Iditarod race commemorates all sled dog accomplishments
including a life-saving journey in 1925, when sled dog teams
brought medicine to a threatened village during an epidemic.
The race starts in Anchorage, Alaska and ends over 1,000 miles
away in Nome.
WHAT IS THE IDITAROD INSIDER?

canine reporters!
MATH STUDENTS CAN CALCULATE:
the effect of weight on speed—uphill and down
the probability of a musher finishing the race
the estimated arrival time for each musher
the fastest route to take!
Science and Snow
Using the scientific method to test mushers’ gear for
effectiveness and safety! Students can:
• identify independent and dependent
variables
• hypothesize how much warmer hands
and feet would be INSIDE the trail gear
as compared to the temperature
OUTSIDE the gear
• write out a materials list and steps for
testing the procedure.
IDITA-READS
incorporate aspects of the race to encourage students to read by using:
themes students enjoy reading about
mushers as benchmarks of reading progress
checkpoints based on the book, pages, and rate of time each student reads.
