Workshop Collocations
• Wetenschappelijke benadering door Sofija Micic,
assistant professor English
• Maar ook meer algemeen behandeld in andere
workshop door Susanne Geercken en Alistair
Reeves
What are collocations?
• "An arrangement of words that sounds natural"
(Longman's Dictionary)
• Co-occurrence of words in natural text in
statistically significant ways
• Not determined by grammar, but by usage
take
effect
utmost
importance
causally
related
Woordcombinaties
Why are they a problem?
• They are highly language-specific / different perception
of the same world in different languages
–
–
–
–
–
put down roots
prendre racines ("take")
echar raices ("throw")
Wurzeln schlagen ("strike")
NL?
• They are a source of language interference
• There is no logic to collocations
• lnformation on collocations missing in (most) dictionaries
Why are they a problem?
• Grammar and vocabulary are not separable
• Acquisition is not a linear process
• Using language does not necessarily help the
learner retain it
• Input does not necessarily become intake
• Explicit description of the patterns is
unnecessary
What types of collocations are there?
• Combinations of verbs and nouns
► We need to …….. objections.
• Combinations of adjectives and nouns
► A ……… amount of blood will be drawn.
(great quantity)
What types of collocations are there?
• Combinations of adverbs and adjectives
► The patient was …… distressed and …… annoyed.
• Compounds
► A bout of cough or a cough bout?
► duration of treatment or treatment duration?
• Combinations of verbs and prepositions
Types of collocations
• weak (see a film) – medium-strength (see a
doctor) – stronger (see reason) – the strongest
(burning ambition)
• lexical (catch fire) and grammatical (aware of)
• word collocations and category collocations
• technical (ankylosing spondylitis) and subtechnical (ease the pain)
Why is it so important to use
collocations correctly?
• Collocations constitute conventions put up
by the users of a given language
• Observe conventions
• Deviate from conventions
