Los mandatos afirmativos
Used to tell someone to do something
 Informal commands are used among
friends, coworkers, relatives or when
addressing a child.
 Formal commands are generally used to
polite or to express respect. For that
reason, the formal commands are often
referred to as polite commands.

How to form formal commands…
Start with the “yo” form of the present
tense
 Then drop the –o ending
 Finally, add the following endings

-ar verbs
-e (for usted) -en (for ustedes)
-er/ir verbs
-a (for usted) -an (for ustedes)
Ejemplos
Hable ud. más
lentamente.
Hablen uds. más
lentemente.

Speak more slowly.

Eat the dinner.

Coma ud. la cena.
Coman uds. la cena.

Escriba ud. la carta.

Escriban uds. la carta.

Write the letter.



Mandatos irregulares…

Remember, if the “yo” form is irregular,
that irregularity is carried over into the
formation of the formal command.
Tengan Uds. un buen viaje
Traiga Ud. el dinero
Venga Ud. conmigo.

This also applies to stem-changing verbs.
Encuentra la tarea.
Vuelvan uds pronto.
Pida dinero.

As with informal commands there are
completely irregular commands:
Dar= dé/den
Ir= vaya/vayan
Saber= sepa/sepan
Estar= esté/estén
Ser= sea/sean
Mandatos negativos


 No escriba ud.



Importante
Also, the subject pronouns usted and
ustedes may or may not be used.
 Using them add a degree of formality or
politeness to the command.

Hable= Speak
Hable ud.= Speak (sir), (more respectful)
